About AMANTHA:
AMANTHA is not a real person. She is a “Vocaloid” character, a computer generated voice for music composition. Sound designer Eamon Goodman used a vocaloid character to compose these songs for Meta-Phys Ed.’s Produciton of THE REPUBLIC: SOCRATES IN THE META-VERSE. The lyrics are by Jesse Freedman inspired by sections of Plato’s Republic.

LYRICS:

Gyges of Lydia

Gyges was a lowly shepherd under Lydian rule.
A heavy rainstorm, an earthquake.
A chasm appeared, where he was pasturing the king’s sheep.
He was fascinated by the sight, and went down into the chasm and saw there,
Artifacts! A bronze horse. Hollow, like a trojan horse and had windows set in it;
he stooped and looked inside and saw the corpse of a giant.

The corpse was naked, but had a golden ring on one finger;
He took the ring and left.

Once a month all the shepherds meet to keep the king informed (about sheep)
Our hero attended wearing the ring and twisted it on his finger.

He turned invisible to his neighbors,

They talked about him as if he’d left.
While fiddling with the ring again, he became visible and thought about this:

I’m gonna do crime!
So, he killed the king, seduced his wife and so took possession of the throne.

Warped Minds, Warped Societies

Competitive, ambitious, acquisitive, mercenary.
How dictatorship evolves
out of democracy?
From oligarchy.

An Insatiably greed
for money over justice.
For Freedom over justice.

Drunk on undiluted freedom,
Citizens get angry at
the slightest hint of servitude.

Mislead by lies and slander
the people become divided
into leaders and followers.

Tyrants and dictators
